Skyline Communications and Lutech Spa to Deploy SDN-Controlled Media Network for Rai Way

Following the related public call for tenders, Rai Way selected Lutech Spa and its partner Skyline Communications for the deployment of their new IP video and audio contribution and distribution network.

Leveraging the flexibility offered by an all-IP software-defined media network orchestrated by DataMiner, Rai Way implemented a brand new contribution infrastructure for its video and audio network. This includes transformation to IP video transport and switching over a quad-redundant network for optimal reliability, supporting both compressed and uncompressed SMPTE ST-2110 and ST-2022-6/7 signals. Services can be easily interconnected and routed in multiple ways by Rai Way operators, using the DataMiner software’s intuitive control surfaces.

The overall solution is being rolled out in sync with the Italian DVB network’s frequency refarming and DVB-T2 switchover program, which imposes a strict project timeline scheme.

Working with Lutech Spa as Rai Way’s lead integrator, Skyline provided an open solution where a converged Cisco and Arista all-IP infrastructure run in parallel, maximizing availability to the highest standards. In this system, DataMiner is not just the SDN service orchestrator and management system acting as the IP fabric; it actually manages end-to-end services, including all multimedia edge devices and compressed signals in DTT/DTH equipment.

“The project for Rai Way has been very interesting, and we are proud that they have deployed DataMiner not only as an SDN service orchestrator, but also in other projects that source and consume data from the IP fabric, such as video management. line heads,” said Bart Reynaert, key account manager at Skyline. “They used DataMiner as their overall management system, providing complete observability and control over all vital parts of the media supply chain. The project needed to be able to not only deliver around the clock, but also provide the quality and reliability associated with this type of infrastructure. In addition, the solution required the degree of resiliency and security required by this industry. Skyline/DataMiner can offer all of this, to enable and support the digital transformation of its customers, facilitating their technology, but also enabling them to collaborate across the entire value chain.

“Lutech Spa is honored to have been selected as the main integrator for the Rai Way all-IP video matrix project”, commented Aurelio Severino, Senior Account Manager at Lutech Spa. “The main task of the Lutech project was to integrate IP networking technologies, such as Cisco and Arista, with broadcast-grade A/V systems from top vendors, such as Imagine and Enensys, and to have all components of the solution well-orchestrated and managed by Skyline’s DataMiner platform Skyline’s engineering and development teams worked around the clock to meet the project’s strict deadlines, dynamically adapting the solution as required of Rai Way in a very fast, flexible and agile way.
