Could Luffy be about to receive help from the last expected person in the One Piece manga?
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for One Piece Chapter 1020, “Robin vs. Black Maria”, by Eiichiro Oda, Stephen Paul and Vanessa Satone, available in English via Manga Plus and Viz Media.
After his dramatic strangulation of Kaido during the ongoing Onigashima raid, Luffy regrouped with Momonosuke and Shinobu in the A piece manga. But they’re being watched from the side by one of the show’s most unexpected characters. Caribou, who previously sought to destroy the Straw Hat Pirates, spies on the meeting behind a tree in Chapter # 1020.
He is at first confused as to why Luffy is not on Onigashima and tells himself that he will never escape the island if the Straw Hat does not “pull together”. What this means for his role in the battle to topple Kaido is unclear, but it could mean that he may just have to step in and lend Luffy a hand if he really has to.
So far, Caribou has only been hostile towards Luffy and his friends. Initially, he and his brother Coribou would leave their mark in the pirate world by killing Marines and training the Caribou Pirates. They would then attempt to join Luffy’s crew in an attempt to destroy them from within, but ended up joining a group simply posing as the Straw Hat Pirates. It wasn’t until the Marines and the real Luffy revealed the impostors that Caribou realized his mistake.
Their paths would cross again at Fish-Man Island, where he would attempt to raid them, but instead end up as their prisoner. Franky locked him in a barrel and he eventually ended up in Mermaid Cove, where the sirens unwittingly released him. Caribou then began kidnapping mermaids to sell them as slaves until an unsuccessful attempt to kidnap Princess Shirahoshi led him to encounter Big Mom pirates Pekom and Tamago. He was defeated in battle, then started kidnapping mermaids again. This time, however, he was caught by Jimbei.
A series of events eventually led him to be captured by X Drive, which is how he ended up in Wano Country, imprisoned at the Prisoner Mine in Udon. It was here that he met Luffy and tried to gain his favor. Luffy had none of that, however.
After being freed by Raizo and helping free Luffy and the other prisoners, Luffy finally accepted his help. He would then help Raizo deactivate the communication network in Udon, thus strengthening his alliance with the Straw Hats. What he has done in the meantime and now in A piece is mostly unknown, but it looks like he may be preparing to help Luffy again, if only to ensure his own survival and escape from Wano.
