GAITHERSBURG, Md., September 29, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – GL Communications Inc., a global leader in telecommunications test and measurement solutions, spoke to the press about its recently released white paper on Validation and regression tests for mobile emergency services networks.

“Mobile emergency service networks include land mobile radio systems and often interface with the public switched telephone network (PSTN). These networks are used by police, firefighters and other first responders and must reliably transmit audio between terminals, ”said Robert Bichefsky, director of engineering at GL Communications.

“To respond to emergency situations, clear communication between staff is mandatory. Poor voice quality and long latency can lead to poor communication with catastrophic consequences such as loss of life and damage to critical infrastructure. Clear voice quality is needed not only outdoors, but also in vehicles, airplanes, buildings and basements.

He added: “Objectively measuring end-to-end voice quality in a wide range of scenarios spanning different locations can be difficult but essential. In this white paper, we have proposed a systematic way to test the quality of voice over mobile networks of emergency services. The resulting tests will identify gaps in coverage, potential sources of interference, and other obstacles. This will allow users to identify and eliminate vulnerabilities in their mobile emergency service networks and better protect their citizens.

Solutions mentioned

  1. VQuad ™ probe: VQuad ™ probe is a stand-alone unit for voice, video and data testing. It contains many physical interfaces for connecting to telecommunications terminals such as radios, landline phones and cell phones.

    The VQuad ™ probe includes the Dual Universal High Density Telephone Adapter (Dual UTA HD) which provides interfaces such as Bluetooth®, 2-wire analog, 4-wire analog, RJ-11 and PTT (Push to Talk for mobile radios). In addition, the VQuad ™ probe includes an integrated single board computer running Windows® 10 64-bit operating system.

  2. vMobile ™: – The vMobile ™ is a portable device that can connect to a single mobile radio and perform the same operations as the VQuad ™ probe. This solution is ultra-portable with a self-contained battery for ease of use during walk tests. Using the built-in WiFi, the vMobile ™ can connect to a mobile phone for WiFi connectivity while connecting to the vMobile ™ center console for remote operation. The vMobile ™ can also be controlled directly from any mobile phone using the installed vMobile ™ Console application to run vMobile ™ fully stand-alone using scripts. In addition, the vMobile ™ and VQuad ™ Probe can operate independently or together as part of a single end-to-end call.

  3. Indoor Tracking System (ITS): – This application works with VQuad ™ / vMobile ™ as well as with GL Voice Quality Testing (VQT) software applications to track voice quality while walking in a building or in an underground place where GPS is not available. ITS allows user to download floor plans as JPG prior to testing, set up test points on JPG, and walk through space while indicating on GUI when passing each preset point while automatically performing voice quality measurements during the test walk.

    As a result, the ITS can plot the results of the voice quality test directly on the floor plan and show how far the user has traveled during the test. This allows the user to accurately identify locations in a building or underground where voice quality is degraded.

  4. VQT software: – The VQT software supports the next generation voice quality test standard for fixed, mobile and IP networks using POLQA (ITU-T P.863) or PESQ (ITU-T P.862) with the ability to correlate PESQ results with DAQ.

    VQT analyzes degraded (received) files and compares them with reference (sent) files using standard ITU POLQA and PESQ algorithms.

  5. WebViewer ™: – The application is a web client for voice and data quality testing. WebViewer ™ uses a simple web browser to view and access, in real time, all results and events associated with the VQuad ™ and VQT tests.

    Using WebViewer ™, you can query and filter results, generate custom reports, schedule report generation and emailing, plot results in Google Maps, and get network status of all deployed devices ( including VQuad ™ probes and vMobile ™ devices).
