River Road in Gore was closed due to Wednesday morning flooding.

Roads around Gore were closed due to flooding, but the Mataura River began to tumble into the town.

Gore District Council said the river had risen significantly overnight.

It closed Woolwich St from Huron St to Boundary Road; Maitland St, from West Stop Bank, River Road from Ontario St to Diamond Peak Road and from Heaps Road to Old Coach Road; and River Street from Hyde St to Bury St and from the Clover Export factory to Salford St.

The council said some of these roads could reopen later this morning, and it asked motorists to take care when traveling south.

Data from Environment Southland shows the river at Gore was 2.74 meters above normal and falling 16mm per hour at 8.35am.

Downstream it was 2.77 meters above normal and increasing 14 mm/hour at Mataura, 2.15 meters above normal and stable at Wyndham and 2.67 meters above above normal and increasing by 38 mm/hour at Seaward Downs.

Transport agency Waka Kotahi NZ still has a surface flood warning in place on State Highway 94 from Kingston to Lumsden, and a 30km/h speed limit is in place.
