Drone Center Sweden chooses Altitude Angel as its ‘foundation stone’ as it begins to build a national drone infrastructure

Altitude Angel, the world’s most trusted Unified Traffic Management (UTM) technology provider, has been selected by Swedish Transport Administration project PNK4UTM and the Swedish Research Institute (RISE) to implement its platform. -form GuardianUTM Enterprise in Sweden’s largest and most advanced drone test area, the 2400 km² Drone Center Sweden.

Developing services on which the country will begin to build its drone operations nationwide, Drone Center Sweden is a unique test bed project in Västervik (on the south-eastern coast of Sweden) which is supported by the Swedish innovation agency Vinnova, the Swedish transport administration, municipality of Västervik, and is coordinated by RISE, the Swedish public research institute. RISE brings together the private and public sectors and academia to develop services, products, technologies, processes and materials, which contribute to a sustainable future and a competitive Swedish business community.

PNK project (Positioning, Navigation and Communications), is an initiative to test, document and assess the possibility and desirability of using the mobile network to position, navigate and communicate with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) beyond the visual line of sight (BVLOS), within Sweden’s existing airspace rules and regulations. Together, RISE, Telia, Ericsson, SWEPOS, Drone Center Sweden and other PNK4UTM project partners will deploy Altitude Angel’s GuardianUTM Enterprise platform to enable safe BVLOS drone operations.

Karim Cosslett, Altitude Angel, Sales & Partnership Manager, said: “Sweden has a rich history of developing and bringing advanced technologies to market. To have GuardianUTM Enterprise chosen by one of the country’s most prestigious institutions, which is developing the next generation of delivery and urban air mobility solutions, is very exciting. Everyone at Altitude Angel is very much looking forward to working with the PNK4UTM and Drone Center Sweden project teams to put in place the infrastructure to realize the almost incalculable potential of drones.

Åke Sivertun (RISE), PNK4UTM Project Manager, added: “Altitude Angel’s GuardianUTM Enterprise platform will give us the foundations on which we can build the future of the Swedish drone network by developing our positioning infrastructure, already extensive navigation and communication to power this emerging network and exciting technology.

“Given the geographic diversity of Sweden, over the years it has built a large and mature communication network. However, this network is currently not optimized to communicate with drones that operate at an altitude between 10 and 120 m, so the coverage must be checked and the cells, in some cases, adjusted to achieve the desired coverage. The new 4-5G radio frequencies offer great opportunities to add services to networks that are important to many target groups, including autonomous vehicles.
