Mangalyaan: Mangalyaan, or India’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), was India’s first interplanetary mission. Launched by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), the Mangalyaan mission not only made ISRO the fourth agency to put a mission into Mars orbit, but also made India the first Asian country. to reach the orbit of Mars.

The Mangalyaan mission also made India the first country to reach Martian orbit on its first attempt. The Mangalyaan mission brought many laurels to India and strengthened the position of the Indian Space Research Organization among global space agencies, including US NASA and Russia Roscosmos.

Design of the Mangalyaan Mission

  • The unmanned Mangalyaan mission was first publicly recognized by then ISRO President G. Madhavan Nair in 2008.
  • The project started after the successful launch of Chandrayaan-1, with a study carried out in 2010 by the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology on the feasibility analysis of the entire project.
  • The project was officially approved by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on August 3, 2012.

Performing the Mars Orbiter mission

  • The launch date first set for the mission was October 28, 2013; however, it was postponed to November 5, 2013 due to adverse weather conditions.
  • Support for the TTC ground stations, the communication network between the ground stations and the control center, the control center including computers, storage, data network and control room installations, has was provided by the ISRO Telemetry Control and Monitoring Network (ISTRAC).
  • The payload carried by the Martian orbiter was as follows: Mars Color Camera (MCC), Thermal Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (TIS), Methane Sensor for Mars (MSM), Mars Exospheric Neutral Composition Analyzer (MENCA), Lyman Alpha Photometer (LAP) ).
  • The Mars Orbiter mission spacecraft was launched from the first launch pad at the Satish Dhawan SHAR Space Center, Sriharikota.
  • A network of ground stations continuously followed the launcher until the spacecraft was separated from the launcher.
  • To support the monitoring of the mission, two ships equipped with on-board terminals (SBT) were deployed in the South Pacific Ocean.
  • The Bangalore Spacecraft Control Center controlled the operations of the spacecraft after it separated from the launcher.

  • Thanks to its Mangalyaan mission, India not only became the first Asian country to achieve the feat of reaching Mars orbit, it also became the first country to do so on its first attempt.
  • The Mangalyaan mission was also hailed as the cheapest mission to Mars to date.
  • In 2015, the team behind the mission won the Space Pioneer Award from the US-based National Space Society.
  • Mangalyaan’s mission also received praise from a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, who called the mission “Pride of Asia.”
